Team Volunteer Roles

As a 99% Volunteer run team- WE NEED YOU! 

We need parents to step into roles to help our team run both behind the scenes and during meets. 

The following is a list of roles that we need filled:

Behind the Scenes -

Sponsorships - Soliciting local businesses to support the Thornwood Sharks.  We are a 501(c)(3) so it is a tax break. 

Team T-shirts- organizing and distributing team t-shirts at practices once they are received. 

Meet Roles-

Volunteer Coordinator - This person is responsible for coordinating all the deck volunteers for each meet.  This requires being able to attend the meet, fill empty positions on the fly, and making sure our volunteers are where they need to be.  

Ready Bench - By age group - This is a go to role supporting our head ready bench organizer.  You will sit with, keep track of and send to events by age group throughout the meets. 

Place Judge- This is Ribbons.  This requires focus on the events, watching the pool, and the ability to stand throughout the meet.  We require 3 per meet. 

Stroke Judge (Requires experience or training) - This position is responsible for observing the races and making sure that swimmers are following our league guidelines for strokes.  Training is provided by the league on one Saturday in May for approximately 2 hrs. 

Turn Judge (Requires experience or training) - This position is responsible for starts, turn and finishes of each race.   The turn judge will observe the race and make sure that swimmers are following our league guidelines for starts, turns and finishes.  Training is provided by the league on one Saturday in May for approximately 2 hrs. 

Meet Director (Requires experience or training) - This position is responsible for ensure that we run a fair and equitable meet.  This is the person who interacts with all judges, starter, and scorekeeper.  This person makes an judgement calls that are requested by a coach in regard to a place in a race, relays all dq's to the scorekeeper, and keeps the meet moving in a timely manner.  This is a full length meet position.  

Scorekeeper (Requires experience or training) - This position tracks and scores all races within a meet.  There is a league scoring system that must be learned.  It does allow for sitting deck side with a prime view of the finishes.  Must be able to do basic math and attend the full meet. 

Set up- 

Home meets - Will set up the deck to facilitate the meet.  Usually a crew work together to make this happen. 

Away meets - Bring needed items to away pool and make sure team has a safe space to be during the meet.  Usually a crew work together to make this happen. 

Clean up- 

Home - Work with a crew and swimmer usually to clear deck and put away all items used for meet.

Away- Work with a crew to load and transport all items back to home pool and put them away. 

Hospitality - Provides water/Gatorade to opposing team coaches, all meet officials, provide assistance as needed to concessions. 

Timers - no experience required but ability to write legibly and work a stop watch. This position is seated at the finish of the pool. It will require standing to make sure of accurate time every race finish.  The timer starts and stops, then records the time of their assigned lane for the duration of the meet.
